Material Science and Clinical Implications

Zirconia exists in three crystalline phases: monoclinic, tetragonal, and cubic. Third-generation high-translucency zirconia achieves 49-53% translucency through increased cubic phase content while maintaining flexural strength above 600 MPa—sufficient for all clinical indications.

The transformation toughening mechanism, where tetragonal crystals convert to monoclinic under stress, creates compressive forces that arrest crack propagation. This property explains zirconia exceptional fracture resistance compared to lithium disilicate.

Preparation Requirements

Monolithic zirconia requires minimum occlusal reduction of 1.0-1.5mm and axial reduction of 0.5-1.0mm—less than traditional ceramics. Chamfer or rounded shoulder margins are acceptable; feather-edge preparations should be avoided.

Cementation Protocols
